Borders In Globalization Lab

The BiG Lab project migrates existing border studies research data to a robust database system and creates a web portal to make this research accessible to fellow researchers and the public. The BiG Dyads database brings together six themes of the Borders in Globalization project, allowing researchers to structure current data, identify trends, and formulate new research questions in comparative border studies.

Overview

The BiG application is built on Django with a PostgreSQL backend and Svelte 5 frontend. The demo currently allows users to query border studies data, explore research findings, and access tools for ongoing data collection.

How we’re helping

Development involves the full ARCsoft team including the team lead (Drew), junior developer (Archie), and co-op students. Lee completed his co-op term in April, with Paurav taking over collaboration since May. The team first focused on migrating the research data to an appropriate PostgreSQL database. Work is being done to demo the web application to the BiG Lab team. The demo currently includes intuitive ways to visualize and query the data as well as an optimized workflow for spreadsheet ingestion.
